Book Porn: Hank Janson

Hank Janson was someone a bit like “Mike Longshott” – a pseudonymous author of pulp (pseudo-American) fiction who was actually British author Stephen Daniel Frances. Some of them were banned or pulped due to their supposedly “obscene” content.

I picked these up in a second hand bookshop in Kuala Lumpur a few years ago, and held on to them. Aren’t they gorgeous?

Book Porn!

I broke down and went for PS Publishing’s 13-books-for-£13 offer:

I didn’t get everything I hoped for – I wanted copies of Sarah Pinborough’s The Language of Dying, Paul di Filippo’s A Princess of the Linear Jungle and John Grant’s The City in These Pages – but I did get the Rio Youers and the Paul Jessup, and the Beth Bernobich is a signed limited edition of 100 – all in all an awesome collection of books that make me want to order a second batch!

Then I went to the London Book Fair and somehow, as if by magic:

Heard good things about Anne Lyle’s The Alchemist of Souls!

And then I got a couple of contributor copies, too:

I officially have Too Many Books.

Book Porn Sunday

first review for The Great Game!

Not only returns to, but surpasses, the promise of the first volume of the series… I heartily recommend The Great Game; not only a satisfying read, but an enjoyable, fun, and interesting one too.

And here’s an actual photo of the printed book! I’ve not seen any yet myself, but this is proof they’re real! (courtesy of SF Signal)

And here’s another review of Osama!

Osama is several things; a hard-boiled detective novel, an alt-history and, in places, it feels like a document of the last decade or so. Also, impressively, Tidhar has created an intensely personal work, yet one which manages to keep some critical distance from what is an emotive subject. I wonder if it is this that makes Osama the most assured piece of work I’ve read by him… This is an incredibly brave, but more importantly, assured novel from Tidhar. It deserves a wide readership.

And hey, Going To The Moon is back from the printers and here’s proof!

It’s alive! Alive!

We’ll be launching both The Great Game and Going To The Moon at the SFX Weekender, 2-5 Feb. in Prestatyn, Wales. Should be fun!

Book Porn: Ellis Peters’ Cadfael novels

Still recovering – sleep’s important! Lots of work to catch up with next week. In the meantime -

My set of 14 or 15 (think one’s out of the frame) Brother Cadfael first editions – a mix of US and UK 1sts, all picked up at the same time. Being a big fan of the novels, I’m delighted to have them on my shelf!
