The British Newspapers on The Violent Century

The reviews keep coming in for The Violent Century, and they’re pretty good!

“A stunning masterpiece” – The Independent

“Tidhar synthesises the geeky and the political in a vision of world events that breaks new superhero ground … Using fantasy to reassert the awful reality of the 20th century is a smart piece of defamiliarisation.” – The Guardian

“A sophisticated, moving and gripping take on 20th century conflicts and our capacity for love and hate, honour and betrayal.” – The Daily Mail

“It’s the X-Men as written by John le Carré … A love story and meditation on heroism, this is an elegiac espionage adventure that demands a second reading.” – Metro

“Could keep anyone, regardless of the types of stories they regularly enjoy, interested and engaged. Tidhar has created a book that oozes excellence in both characterisation and storytelling.” – The Huffington Post

Publication Day!

The Violent Century is officially published today! There’s a review in today’s Metro, saying:

It’s the X-Men as written by John le Carré, a shadowy alternate history in which cynical Cold War compromises are all too real. Agents Fogg and Oblivion investigate a conspiracy dating back 75 years to post-war Berlin.

The British duo haven’t aged since 1932, when hundreds of mutants were created from the sub-atomic wave unleashed by a German scientist. Several years later, warring nations rally the troops with front-line superheroes but some end up as grisly Übermenschen experiments in Auschwitz.

Tidhar’s Jewish heritage enriches his self-aware, tersely styled narrative. A love story and meditation on heroism, this is an elegiac espionage adventure that demands a second reading.

Which is nice!

The book is available in the UK in hardcover (currently discounted!), as an audio book (read by Jonathan Keeble) and, of course, for the Kindle.

[It is also available for US readers as an export hardcover, in audio or for the Kindle.]

Sorry all the links are to Amazon, but you can also get it from the Play store, Audible, Waterstones, Forbidden Planet and so on (and there should be signed copies in London at least by next week). In fact, I’ll be signing copies on Monday at the Secret Histories event at Blackwell’s, Charing Cross Road, with Tim Powers and Kate Griffin (sadly the event is sold out).

The signed limited edition, meanwhile, is available for pre-order and will be launched at the World Fantasy Convention in Brighton next week.

The Violent Century

THE VIOLENT CENTURY

They’d never meant to be heroes.

For seventy years they guarded the British Empire. Oblivion and Fogg, inseparable friends, bound together by a shared fate. Until one night in Berlin, in the aftermath of the Second World War, and a secret that tore them apart.

But there must always be an account… and the past has a habit of catching up to the present.

Now, recalled to the Retirement Bureau from which no one can retire, Fogg and Oblivion must face up to a past of terrible war and unacknowledged heroism – a life of dusty corridors and secret rooms, of furtive meetings and blood-stained fields – to answer one last, impossible question:

What makes a hero?

The Violent Century!

The cover has been unveiled:

The Violent Century

Some blurbs!

“A brilliantly etched phantasmagoric reconfiguring of that most sizzling of eras—the twilight 20th.” – James Ellroy

“If Nietzche had written an X-Men storyline whilst high on mescaline, it might have read something like VIOLENT CENTURY.” – Adam Roberts

“An alternative history tour-de-force. Epic, intense and authentic. Lavie Tidhar reboots the 20th century with spies and superheroes battling for mastery – and the results are electric.” – Tom Harper

And a couple of early reviews yesterday:

“Could keep anyone, regardless of the types of stories they regularly enjoy, interested and engaged. Tidhar has created a book that oozes excellence in both characterisation and storytelling.” – The Huffington Post.

“The Violent Century is what you’d get if Cormac McCarthy wrote a mash-up of Watchmen and Casablanca.” – J For Jetpack.

And you can pre-order the hardcover on Amazon for only £12.53.

The Violent Century Goes to Japan

I’m delighted to say that my forthcoming novel, The Violent Century, has sold to the Japanese publisher Tokyo Sogen. This is very cool news – first, because being published in Japan is awesome, and second, it’s not bad for a book not even published yet! This is the first translation sale for TVC, but I’m told there are others in the works right now. Hodder, meanwhile, are hard at work on finalising the UK cover, so hopefully I’ll have something to share soon.

The Bookman Histories trilogy, meanwhile, will be published in Japan by Hayakawa over the course of 2014, translated byYoshio Kobayashi. I’m very much looking forward to that.

Meanwhile, here’s Alphaville with Big in Japan.

The Violent Century

At last it can be told: my new novel, The Violent Century, has sold to Hodder & Stoughton in the UK, in a two-book deal. It is already available for pre-order on Amazon, and will be published in hardcover in October. In addition, PS Publishing will do a signed limited edition of the book for the collectors market.

Here is the press release:

Anne Perry has acquired World English rights to two books by Lavie Tidhar. The deal was negotiated by Tidhar’s agent, John Berlyne at the Zeno Agency.

Tidhar recently won the 2012 World Fantasy Best Novel Award for his novel Osama. He is one of the rising young stars of the genre world; in addition to Osama (which has been shortlisted for or won numerous prizes, including the BSFA award for best novel, the John W. Campbell best novel award, and the Kitschies’ Red Tentacle), Lavie has also written The Bookman Histories, an historical fantasy trilogy published by Angry Robot, numerous novellas, short stories and even a comic-book.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy meets Watchmen in Tidhar’s The Violent Century, the thoughtful and intensely atmospheric novel about the mystery, and the love story, that determined the course of history itself. The Violent Century is the sweeping drama of a time we know too well; a century of fear and war and hatred and death.  In a world where everyday heroes may become übermenschen, men and women with extraordinary powers, what does it mean to be a hero? To be a human? Would the last hundred years have been that much better if Superman were real?

Would they even have been all that different?

John Berlyne says: ‘This deal tops off what has been a most incredible 2012 for Lavie. With The Violent Century, this fearless young author further establishes himself as a unique voice in modern fiction and I’m delighted that Hodder will be publishing.’

Anne Perry says: ‘In the last few years, Lavie has undertaken staggeringly ambitious projects – Osama, after all, is a novel about a world in which Osama bin Laden is the  villain in  a series of pulp novels – and made them work. With The Violent Century, however, Lavie has reached a new level. The book demonstrates the maturity, the confidence, and the control of an author now really hitting his stride, and I’m beyond thrilled that Lavie has chosen to publish with Hodder & Stoughton.’ The Violent Century will publish in October 2013.
